The Guide - Resource Usage

Manage your Resource Usage

The default installation of configures your system to use very little resources. You have control of what is being shared and how much uses your Internet connection.

When your Connection is used by

is a peer-to-peer program, which means that it communicates with other peers (other or compatible programs).

1. Sharing

When you have installed , the install program will be saved into your 'My Shared Folder' and shared out. All files that are saved in your 'My Shared Folder' will be available for other users - and users of compatible programs to download. If other users find your files and subsequently download them from you, your Internet connection will be used. If you do not want this to happen, you may delete the file from your 'My Shared Folder' or go into 'My Kazaa' view within , right click the file and select 'Do Not Share This File'.

To disable sharing altogether, go to Tools>Options>Sharing and un-check the 'Share files in 'My Shared Folder'' option.

2. Other ways to manage your resource usage

You can go to Tools>Options>Advanced and adjust the settings to suit your needs:

a. Maximum Bandwidth
This limits the amount of bandwidth available for uploading of files based on kilobits. Go to Tools>Options>Advanced and here you can set a bandwidth limit if necessary.

b. Do not function as a Supernode
Check this box only if you do not want to act as a Supernode.

Your application may serve as a Supernode (computers act as Supernodes randomly). If your computer is acting as a Supernode, other peers will upload an index of files they are sharing to your computer and send search queries to your computer. Your computer will reply to these requests and also forward the request to other Supernodes.

If your computer is serving as a Supernode:

- No information about you or your computer is obtained by Sharman Networks developers of .

- Your CPU and Internet connection will be used, however the use will not amount to more than 10% of its resources.

Read more about peer-to-peer and Supernodes.

Important Note
If your ISP has a set bandwidth restriction we recommend that you choose not to function as a Supernode, and that you monitor the amount of bandwidth you use when downloading and uploading files.

c. Optimal bandwidth use when computer is idle
If this option is checked your bandwidth will be automatically optimized when your computer is idle, or not being used.

d. Traffic Limits
These options let you set limits based on the number of simultaneous files that can be downloaded or uploaded. This helps you manage bandwidth usage.

e. Restore Defaults
Resets all 'Advanced' options back to default settings.
