Understanding the Interface

There are number of different buttons, toolbars and menus on Kazaa Media Desktop (KMD). Here are some short descriptions of what each item does. We’ll start in the top left hand corner of ‘The Classic’ Kazaa Media Desktop (no skin) and move across to the right.


The Menu Bar

File

File > Connect
If Kazaa Media Desktop is not connected click on ‘Connect’. ‘Connect’ will be greyed out if you are lready connected.

File > Disconnect If you would like to disconnect Kazaa Media Desktop for any reason, click on ‘Disconnect’. Disconnect will be greyed out if you are not connected.

File > New P2P Search Clicking on ‘New P2P Search’ opens up a new search window.

File > Close Clicking on ‘Close’ will minimize Kazaa Media Desktop to your system tray. The program will continue running in the background.

View

Use the view menu to switch between views.

View > Web Displays Kazaa Media Desktop’s built in web browser.

View > My Kazaa Displays the ‘My Kazaa’ view. Use the ‘My Kazaa’ view to manage and access your files.

View > Theater Displays the ‘Theater’ view. Use Theater to view images and videos.

View > Search Displays the ‘Search’ view. Use this view to search for files.

View > Traffic Displays the ‘Traffic’ view. Use the traffic view to monitor the progress of your downloads and uploads.

View > Shop Displays The Kazaa Media Desktop shop.

Player

Use the ‘Player’ menu to control the Kazaa Media Desktop built-in media player. There are six options in the menu. They are; ‘Play’, ‘Pause’, ‘Stop’, ‘Previous’, ‘Next’ and ‘Mute’.

Favorites

The ‘Favorites’ menu is a list of your Internet Favorites. The ‘Favorites’ listed in Kazaa Media Desktop are the same as your ‘Favorites’ in Internet Explorer. Adding a new favorite is easy. Simply go to the ‘Web’ view, type the URL of the site you want to visit into the address bar and hit the enter key. When the site appears, click on Favorites-> Add to Favorites. A new ‘Favorite’ added in Kazaa Media Desktop will also appear in Internet Explorer. A new ‘Favorite’ added in Internet Explorer will also appear Kazaa Media Desktop.

Tools

Tools > Tell A Friend About Kazaa Media Desktop Send an email to a friend telling them about Kazaa Media Desktop.

Tools > Clear Web History Clears the URLs in the address bar drop down list in ‘Web’ view.

Tools > Clear P2P Search History Clears the keywords in ‘Search For’ drop down list in ‘Search’ view.

Tools > Options Allows you to modify the settings of Kazaa Media Desktop. Read Changing Your Settings.

Actions

The items in the ‘Actions’ menu change depending on what view you are in. Find out more about the different views.

When you are in the ‘Web’ view, the actions are ‘Back’, ‘Forward’, ‘Stop’, ‘Refresh’ and ‘Home’.

When you are in the ‘My Kazaa’ view, the actions are ‘Play/View’, ‘Integrity Rating’, ‘Add to Playlist’, ‘Start Sharing’, ‘Delete’, ‘Locate File’, ‘Save As’, ‘Edit Details’ and ‘Find More From Same’.

When you are in the ‘Theater’ view there is only one action, ‘Find More From Same’.

When you are in the ‘Search’ view, the actions are ‘Download’, ‘Download and Open’, ‘Add to Playlist’, ‘Find More From Same’, ‘Back’, ‘Forward’ and ‘Close Tabs’.

When you are in the ‘Traffic’ view, the actions are ‘Preview/Play’, ‘Pause ’, ‘Resume Download’, ‘Cancel Download’, ‘Cancel All Downloads’, ‘Clear Downloads and Erroneous’, ‘Cancel All Uploads’, ‘Clear Uploaded and Erroneous’, ‘Add to Playlist’ and ‘Find More From Same’.

The Tool Bar

There are nine buttons on the tool bar.

Web
The ‘Web’ view contains the Kazaa Media Desktop web pages which display digitally rights managed downloads on the ‘Start’, ‘Audio’, ‘Games’, ‘Software’ and ‘Video’ pages. User information is available, such as this guide.

You can also access the ‘Search’ and ‘Browse’ Channels via the ‘Channel Directory’ page, or directly from the Web view once you have ‘Added Channel’. Channels allow you search and/or browse third party websites or databases to find content that may not be available via P2P search. Read more about channels.

You can also use the browser in ‘Web’ view to surf the web.

My Kazaa
Displays the ‘My Kazaa’ view. Manage and access your files here.

Theater
Use ‘Theater’ view to view images and videos.

Search
Displays the ‘Search’ view. Search P2P or Web for files or data.

Traffic
Displays the ‘Traffic’ view. Use the ‘Traffic’ view to monitor the progress of your downloads and uploads.

Shop
Displays the Kazaa Media Desktop shop.

Tell a Friend About Kazaa Media Desktop
Send an email to a friend telling them about Kazaa Media Desktop.

The Channel Bar

The ‘Channel Bar’ is located directly underneath the main Kazaa Media Desktop window.

The ‘Channel Directory’ displays all the channels with links to add ‘Search Channels’ and ‘Browse Channels’. Once added, shortcuts to ‘Browse Channels’ are displayed along this bar and can be accessed at any time. Search Channels appear in ‘Search’ view. Browse channels appear in ‘Web’ view.

Once added from the ‘Channel Directory’, both Browse and Search Channels can be managed from the menu accessed from the small green triangle to the far left of the Channel Bar. Read more about Channels.

The Media Player Control Bar

Use the buttons on this menu to control the media player. The window under this bar displays the name of the media you are currently playing or the last piece of media you have played.

The Status Bar

The ‘status bar’ is the last line that runs across Kazaa Media Desktop. This bar contains several pieces of information including your Participation Level, the number of Kazaa Media Desktop users online, and your sharing status.
