Kazaa Media Desktop: an overview

Using the latest P2P technology, Kazaa Media Desktop (link) enables users to download and share Gold Icon files, which are high quality, professional files from a variety of content providers and creators.

These include music, video games, software utilities and videos provided directly by emerging artists, record labels, video game publishers, movie studios, producers and developers.

Most Gold Icon files are Digitally Rights Managed. Typically, they can be trialed or previewed for a set length of time so that you can see whether it’s something you’d like to own.

At the end of the trial period you'll be prompted with information about purchasing or extending your trial of the file. Each file will have its own individual pricing and license agreement authorized by the content owner.

What are Gold Icon files?

When a Gold Icon appears with a file, it signifies a high quality file brought to you from professional creators through Altnet’s Top Search index in Kazaa Media Desktop search results. Simply double-click or right-click and select ‘Download’ to request the file.

The more Gold Icon files you download, share upload the more you’ll benefit from Altnet’s Peer Points Manager. If you decide to purchase a Gold Icon file, you may be rewarded with additional Peer Points.

Your accumulated Peer Points total will be displayed in the top toolbar of the Peer Points Manager. You can also access your Peer Points total by clicking the ‘Points’ tab in Peer Points Manager or through the ‘Need2Find’ toolbar which you installed with Kazaa v2.5 or above.

You can check your monthly statement on the ‘Points’ tab of Peer Points Manager. Your statement will include a full summary of your Peer Points as well as those you have redeemed and you will automatically qualify for free entry into monthly sweepstakes regardless of how many Peer Points you have collected.

Altnet’s Peer Points Manager does not use your CPU for distributed computing, nor will it download or ‘push’ files to your PC without your permission – it simply shares out Gold Icon files that you download through Kazaa Media Desktop.

Here’s how:

How to stop sharing

Altnet’s Peer Points Manager is automatically configured to run at startup so you can maximise the Peer Points rewarded for sharing Gold Icon files. If you want to stop sharing you can:

1. Run Peer Points Manager and click on the ‘Settings’ tab.
2. Uncheck the ‘Enable File Sharing’ checkbox.

It’s that easy.

PC requirements

Peer Points Manager requires a PC running Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP with Internet Explorer 5 or later and 64MB RAM or more.

When to share

Altnet’s Peer Points Manager is designed for sharing Gold Icon files, so to make the most of it you’ll want to share as often as possible.

The Peer Points Manager ‘Settings’ page gives a variety of options for when and how much sharing you do. It is recommended that you set Altnet’s Peer Points Manager to start and stop sharing in tandem with the times that are most convenient for you.

The Peer Points Manager ‘Home’ page shows you the number of Peer Points you have. It also lists the Top Peer Points leaders and tells you all the latest news and offers.

Redeem your Peer Points for content and chances to win prizes

The ‘Redeem’ page is your gateway to redeeming your Peer Points, listing items that you can redeem. Some items are available for a limited time only, so be sure to check out the ‘Redeem’ page frequently. It’s simple – just click the ‘Redeem’ button within Peer Points Manager to display the sweepstakes* and content available for you to redeem at your current Peer Points total.

Looking after your wallet

5. Uninstalling & Opting Out

Uninstalling PPM

You can easily uninstall Peer Points Manager by using the Add/Remove Programs function in Windows. When you uninstall Peer Points Manager, it uninstalls independently from other Internet and P2P applications. Should you experience any problems, please visit www.altnet.com, click ‘Support’, then go to ‘Ask Altnet’ within 'online Help' in Peer Points Manager and log a customer support request.

Canceling your Altnet account altogether

To cancel your Altnet account:

1. 1. Visit www.altnet.com
2. 2. Click “Log In”
3. 3. Enter your email address and password (if you’ve forgotten your password, click the link to have it emailed to you)
4. 4. Click “View Account”
5. 5. On the Account Details page, click “Delete Account”

If you change your mind, you can start a new account with Altnet at any time.
