American Idiot – The Movie?

Green Day Have High Expectations of Film

Green Day is set to turn the stage production of American Idiot (based on the 2004 concept album) into a feature film. The stage production follows a group of working-class characters from American suburbia to the city and eventually into the Middle East. The major theme that encompasses the production is the seeking of redemption in a frustrated world.

The play was co-written by front man Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer. The later a Tony award winning director for the play Spring Awakening. The stage show is highly anticipated by fans and the theatre set and will premier at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California this Sept.

Armstrong is keen to further this production in the same vein as the iconic Rocky Horror Picture Show. He spoke with the Associated Press. "I thought American Idiot had a lot in common with something like Rocky Horror Picture Show," while further adding "It would be great to see a film make out of it someday, too."

Ambition has never been a problem for the Green Day front man; he has overseen the meteoric rise of his group during the last two decades. The RHPS though is the longest-running film in history and is still in release over three decades after its premier.
